The Widespread Use of Laser Technology
A laser is an electronic-optical device that emits coherent light radiation. The term “laser” is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The first working laser was demonstrated on May 16, 1960 by Theodore Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories. Since then, they have become ubiquitous, finding utility in thousands of highly varied applications in every section of modern society, including consumer electronics, information technology, science, medicine, industry, law enforcement, entertainment, and the military. In industry, lasers are used for cutting steel and other metals, for inscribing patterns and laser etching machines. Lasers are used by the military for rangefinding, target identification and illumination for weapons delivery. Lasers used in medicine are used for internal surgery and cosmetic applications.
The most widespread use of lasers is in optical storage devices such as compact disc and DVD players, in which the laser scans the surface of the disc. Other common applications of lasers are bar code readers, laser printers and laser pointers. Since the laser technology is proven to have so many benefits, researches have been doing studies to improve and develop this technology.
